Another thing I don't get.....

Why is it that so many people get pets, love the pets, then get rid of them once they have children? It's such a sad thing. "Hi puppy! I love you today!" then a few months later it's gone. Most of the time it's because people just don't want to deal with a pet. It's done nothing wrong.

I understand that sometimes pets react badly to a baby coming into the house. When I say this I don't mean it's a little more needy or hyper I mean when they snap and try to hurt someone. Then if that happens by all means it's not a good fit. But just because you need to pay attention to it and you don't want to....you toss it? I want to say it's a nasty character flaw...but that's a little harsh. So stupid I shall call it.

OOOOO I am right there with you. Those kind of people drive me insane. Then again, the people that get a pet then when it's time to move, abandon it, drive me insane too.

A pet should be a member of your family. Yes, if it's aggressive, then it probably needs to find a different home, but other than that, it's your pet! Ugh!

You be nice and call it stupid, I'm gonna call it heartless. Cause it's just cruel.

I totally agree!! It's so sad how people see pets as "expendable", especially when im the type to see them as "family".

I definitely agree with you. It's so sad that you see this so much in military communities as well. We see so many stray cats that have obviously been dumped because they are fixed. It's horrible. I have a 3 year old american pit bull that I have had since she was 4 weeks old. She is a rescue. I couldn't see myself ever giving her away. I also have a 9 month old cat, and he's seriously the devil's cat, but I could never see myself giving him away either.

Yup agreed! As much as John hates our dogs they aren't going anywhere! Kaylin LOVES them way to much....and they are AWESOME with her.

I have seen it way to many times and its heart breaking.

Before I had my first child I had two labs. A female yellow Lab (Zoe) that I found as a stray after a hurricane when she was only about 8 weeks old and a male black Lab (Boz) that we purchased as a puppy from a local couple that bred their dogs once a year. They have complete opposite personalities; Zoe being much more laid back and requiring much less attention.
They were my babies. They slept in bed with me when hubby was deployed or on duty and we frequented the dog park. They were spoiled rotten. I even wrote a college essay on how dogs impact a person's emotions and well being in a positive way.
Then, I had my first child. Two dogs simply became too much, especially when hubby was not around. I couldn't give them the attention I once had and I felt awful about that. Boz was so playful and hyper and constantly wanted to play. He was also jumpy around kids for some reason. His wagging tail was the equivalent of a cracked whip, and when my son was learning to walk, it became a real issue. We ended up giving him to my Father-in-Law, who is retired and treats his dogs like children, so he is MUCH better off now, and we still get to see him when we go visit. It was very difficult, but I strongly feel this was the best decision for all of us.
Kids come before pets, and sometimes it's really unfair to the pet, so the best decision might be to find it a new home where it can receive the attention it deserves. Hopefully, if it comes to that, you'll be as lucky as us and be able to keep the pet in the family.
